Japanese neckties from Kyoto

silk neckties

"My grandmother visiting her client to present her new silk neckties.   She is 84 now and still enjoys nurturing the relationships built over years, selling ties. She knows every customer by their name and their preference. She does not use computers. I am proud of her and to have her "Nishijin" neckties at Kocoon." Nishijin silk is only available in Kyoto, Japan. It originated more than 1000 years ago. Like Chirimen, this fabric is also made from silk, but the way it is woven is different. The main difference is that the thread is dyed before it is woven. As a result, the colors come out much richer in Nishijin silk than Chirimen. Making Nishijin silk involves more than 20 steps performed by a highly skilled craftsmen. The name Nishijin is a name of town in Kyoto where it started. This town is known for producing one of the highest quality silk in the world like silk from La Croix-Roussein in Lyon, France. These high-class woven textiles started to be made in the area to meet the demand of theimperial court and aristocracy. Today, it is used for not only kimonos or obi, but also for ties, handbags, shawls, and home decoration.
